Saudi Officials in Tough Talks to Retain Cristiano Ronaldo Amid Club World Cup Speculations

RIYADH – Saudi Arabian officials are engaged in intense negotiations to retain Cristiano Ronaldo, after the star footballer hinted at his departure from Al Nassr following a trophyless season in the Saudi Pro League.
According to a source close to the matter, the talks are being led by the Public Investment Fund (PIF), which controls several top-tier Saudi clubs, including Al Nassr, Al Hilal, and Al Ahli.
Ronaldo Hints Exit with “This Chapter is Over” Post
Cristiano Ronaldo, 40, sparked speculation about his exit when he posted “This chapter is over” shortly after Al Nassr concluded their season in third place, once again finishing without any silverware. The Portuguese forward’s contract with Al Nassr is set to expire at the end of next month.
Al Hilal or Al Ahli Could Be Next
The source from PIF revealed:
“There is an ongoing difficult negotiation to convince Ronaldo to stay and play in the Saudi Pro League next season. The first option is a transfer to Al Hilal with an opportunity to feature in the FIFA Club World Cup or to Asia champion Al Ahli.”
Club World Cup Opportunity
A special transfer window from June 1–10 has been opened for the 32 teams participating in the expanded FIFA Club World Cup, which kicks off in the United States from June 14.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino recently commented:
“There are discussions over Ronaldo playing at the Club World Cup. If any club is watching and is interested in hiring Ronaldo… who knows.”
Ronaldo’s Impact in Saudi Arabia
Cristiano Ronaldo joined Al Nassr in early 2023 from Manchester United, becoming the first major European star to sign with a Saudi club. He helped draw global attention to the Saudi Pro League and paved the way for other top players to follow.
Despite scoring 25 goals and becoming the league’s top scorer, he has not secured a major domestic or continental trophy with Al Nassr. He also played a key role in enhancing the Saudi football brand internationally.
“Ronaldo’s presence is a key factor in developing the Saudi league in the last two and a half years,” the PIF source added. “He opens the door for elite and young players to come to Saudi Arabia.”
Uncertain Future Amid Messi’s Club World Cup Appearance
While Lionel Messi is confirmed to appear in the Club World Cup with Inter Miami, Ronaldo’s future remains undecided.
Ronaldo had previously stated his desire to end his career at Al Nassr, a club favored by several Saudi royals. However, the recent post and lack of trophies have raised questions about his next move.
Context: Saudi Football’s Global Vision
Saudi Arabia has invested billions into football in recent years, aiming to elevate the domestic league and prepare for hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2034. The country has already lured top names like Ronaldo and Neymar, with the latter leaving Al Hilal after just seven appearances.
